Wade was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Friday for the gesture, which he made after making a game-clinching 3-pointer with 26.3 seconds left that gave the Bulls a lead they would not relinquish. He admitted after the game that he “had an out-of-body experience” after hitting the 3 in his Bulls debut.
Since signing with the Bulls over the summer, Wade has spoken publicly many times about trying to cut down the violence within Chicago.
Wade, 34, did not address reporters after Friday’s practice. Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said that Wade didn’t do much in practice as the Bulls try to keep him healthy for the long grind of the NBA season.
“I wanna apologize to my young fans on my gesture at the end of last nights game,” Wade wrote on Twitter. “I was caught up in the emotions of my first game at home.” That didn’t prevent the NBA from fining him $25,000.
That matched the $25,000 that Kevin Durant was docked in April 2013 for a throat-slash gesture when he was with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Per ESPN.com’s Nick Friedell, Wade said after the game on Thursday night he “had an out-of-body experience” when he made the gesture.
Thursday marked Wade’s debut with the Bulls after 13 seasons with the Miami Heat. It was also a homecoming of sorts for the Chicago native, who tallied 22 points, six rebounds, five assists and one block in the Bulls’ home opener.
The motion clearly implied, I have killed the Celtics’ chances of winning this game. The irony is Wade has been a strong proponent in cutting down the violence in Chicago since signing during the summer. He was born and raised in the city.
